BOTTLED WATER OR TAP WATER?

Consumers spend more than $100 billion annually on bottled water. During these tough economic times, you can save significant amount of money and protect the environment in Oyster Bay,NY by choosing tap water.

A 16 oz. bottle of water can cost as much as $1.50 whereas a 16 oz. glass of tap water can cost less than 1/10 of 1 cent.

Tap water undergoes more vigorous testing than bottled water.  Tap water is monitored in accordance with the quality standards of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  Bottled water is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Tap water contains flouride for strong teeth.  Many brands of bottled water do not include flouride for oral health.

Bottles from the bottled water end up in our landfills.  Tap water is more environmentally friendly.

So refill that bottle with your tap water and you can save over $500 per year.

A gallon of bottled water costs more than a gallon of gas.  Dumb, dumb!

Hmmm. so does that mean I'm wasting my money on my "Arrow Head Mountain Spring Water"?

Rosalinda:  Personally, being from California, our family prefers filtered water and then we put it into our own re-usable bottles.

Rosalinda-Your economic points cannot be refuted. However, the bottled water marketers make a powerful argument for the designer, and speciality water products. The health scares about bad chemicals in the water, cancer causing agents, and municipal water that receive poor test results really make a lot of people question tap water safety.

Conrad - That's true.

Sophia - You are wasting your money all right.  Sometimes, it is really affectation.  Get a filter if you are uncomfortable with the tap.

Jane - That's what we do.  I have a filter underneath the sink and just refill my reusable bottles.

Wayne - Towns have very high standard of water safety.  In my town we have a quarterly report that comes with the bill.  Few months ago, I heard from the news that some bottled waters are even contaminated.

I agree with Jane.  Filtered tap water into my Nagene bottle makes the best choice for me.  The plastic water bottles are wasteful and still under debate whether or not they contain Bisphenol A (BPA).  A compound that the FDA has "issues" about.  So, besides helping you wallet, you can avoid possible future health problems by steering clear of the water bottles.

Rosalinda,

Great post!  However, I choose bottled water any day over tap because tap water taste horrible (IMHO) and I work in Houston and live in the suburbs and the City of Houston has one of the dirtiest public water systems in the country ... so I prefer to drink something that isn't tainted with chemicals and who knows what else.  I suppose if the water was safe to drink here, I might reconsider.  :)

Monica is right Houston water can be nasty. There is even some up North of Houston that catches on fire it you put a match to it. However I think it is the older piping system that make the water nasty. Houston gets most of it's water from Lake Houston if I am not mistaken.

I don't know where Clear Lake gets its water. I still prefer getting water from my own tap. You can get a filtering system and save money and ease your health concerns.

All public water is tested by each municipality to see if it is safe. It is when the officials start lying about the quality of water that you need to be sweating about.
