I don't think I have seen COTINUS COGGYGRIA (SMOKE BUSH) before.  Is it native to your area?

Joan - I don't think it is native here.  I saw this one at the New York Botanical Garden.  I always wanted to get one for my garden but found out it can grow to 15 ft so I decided not to.  Wayside catalog said it can grow to 7 ft but I don't want to take a chance.  I guess I can trim it to keep it low.  It's a lovely plant and very unique.

Rosalinda - I am amazed by anyone that can throw around the Latin names of plantlife.  I'm doing good to even remember their common names.

Myrl - It's fun to learn those latin names.  It makes me look knowledgeable when I'm talking with my friends who are Master Gardeners which I am not although I am a Master Rosarian.  I just love to garden and I have all kinds of plants in my garden.  I think I probably have more plants than my friends who are Master Gardeners.

Very interesting.  These things grow to 15 feet!?  Wow, I would be in the right location it can really add some color though.  Maybe even serve as a privacy hedge?

Hey, Rosalinda - I've found that they are very easy to keep into a compact bush. I had one at my house that burned in the October 2003 wildfires here, and since the smokebush is difficult to find, I don't have another one yet. I forget when they bloom, but if you see one in full bloom, you'll never forget it.

About the only smoke bush/smoketree that gets to 15 feet is the American smoketree (Cotinus obovatus). The smokebush you have pictured (Cotinus coggygria) actually prefers to be a bush with no help from us.

If you're looking for a great smokebush, look for Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'.

Michael - I have never seen it as a hedge but I suppose you can try it.

Russel - I believe the smokebush above is 'Royal Purple'.  I do like it very mcuh. It is so unique and I like unique plants.  I lost a huge Rose of Sharon 3 years ago and I'd thought of replacing it with Smokebush.  Never got to it.  Too late now because we are moving to Charleston, SC as soon as we sell my house in NY.  BTW, Heronswood Nursery carries it.  I saw it at a couple of plant catalogs but I can't remember which ones and I must have thrown the catalogs out.

Wait until it blooms! They are magnificent. We used to have one outside the office window.

Jim - So I heard.  I've got to see one in bloom.
