MY DOG LOVED THE SNOW, NOT THIS HEAT WAVE

I found this photo while I was sorting some of my stuffs for my move to my next home.

My dog, Jake, loved and enjoyed the last winter when there were plenty of snow to play around.  With the heat wave going on for the last three weeks, he looks tired and weary.  All he does all day is lie down on the rug and sleeps.  He will go out with me outside in the morning while I weed before it really gets hot and he just lie down on the dirt underneath the shade of the tree.  He used to drink milk in the morning after I finished my cereal and he loved it.  He had two servings this week and he threw up on both occasions so I stopped giving him milk.  Luckily he did it near the back door.  A little bit came on the area  rug which I hose-washed outside.  It dried in two hours under the hot sun.  That's how hot it was.  He has been drinking milk since we got him from the Animal Shelter in 1998.  Now his stomach can't take it.  I believe it is the weather.  I'm sure he can't wait for that first snow fall.

Rosalinda, I have St. Bernards so I understand. They were made for and love the snow. They have kiddy pools that they lay in during this heat after we get back from walks or the dog park. Otherwise it is the air conditioned house all the time for them!

Beautiful dog, Rosalinda.  I miss the snow too.  (Never thought I'd say that.)  The heat is downright oppressive.  Last summer my Boxer had a problem with the heat.  He wasn't right after being out in it.

Shar - My neighbor also have a kiddie pool where their dog sat after their walk.

Anne - We used to have 1 week of heat wave in the summer and that was it.  This year, it has been hot since before 4th of July.

Hi Rosalinda,

Thanks for the post. Soory to hear about Jake and the heat. I have a kiddy pool for my lab. She had been a bit tired and over-heated. The pool and shade has helped.

Hope Jake feels better.

Patrick - Thanks for dropping by.  I hope this heat wave comes to an end.  Jake seems to be okay.  He just spends more time spread out on the rug asleep.

Nice looking dog.  Hope he gets better soon.  The hot weather hurts everything.

Rosalinda,  I live in south Florida and have two small dogs.  I walk them early in the morning so they and I are not out in the heat when they sun is blaring hot.  I also wipe their paws with a damp cloth when they come in because I've heard they can burn from walking on a sidewalk.

Jake is probably not used to the heat.  I would keep him inside as much as I could.

Gene - He is OK now.  I just refrained from giving him his milk in the morning.  This morning, he was waiting in the kitchen for his milk but I just ignored him.  I let him out the back door to chase the squirrels instead.

Elyse - We are down to two walks a day instead of three.  I found Jake walking very slow nowadays too.  He must be getting old and the heat is not helping him at all.  Great idea about the damp cloth after the walk.  Thanks.  I'll try that.

Rosalinda, our dogs are the same, but I don't have to shovel heat!  I know you guys have really gotten hit hard for weeks, stay hydrated and hope for rain and a prolonged cold front!  I will hope for them with you!

Rosalinda - So many animals don't appreciate the heat we have been having.  I have an American Eskimo dog, and we experienced several days of 100+ degree heat.  It would have done him in, had I not taken extra special care with him.

I can relate to how he must feel...I think many of us humans feel the same way. It would be nice if we could have the snow available on a moment's notice.

Tony & Darcy - It has been so hot and humid that not only my dog is suffering but my plants are wilting too.  We got very little rain in my area, although some areas of Long Island got flooded with scattered rain.

Myrl - I don't have a central air but I keep the fan going till about 2 PM and then I put the airconditioner downstairs on till I go to bed and then the conditioner upstairs starts and stays on till I get up in the morning.  Jake stays with me most of the time.

John - Jake likes the snow but I don't.  I wish we can have spring and fall weather everytime.  Though that can be boring.

Sound like it is time to stop the milk treats. My dog will eat anything that comes her way from cement to dental flos. Luckily no problems yet.

Andy - I stopped the milk treats for a few days while the temperature was on the 90s.  It was nice and cool this morning so he got his milk again.  No problem so far.  I think it is the weather.
