For lovers of colonial homes, there are plenty of choices in Oyster Bay, NY As of March 10, 2010, there are 27 homes on the market at different price ranges.
The organization called "Save the Jewel by the Bay" is actively pursuing the preservation of these old colonials that dot the landscape of downtown Oyster Bay, NY.
Colonial Homes is recognized for its handsome architecture, its important history and the comfort it brings to the family. Plenty of those old vintage colonials have been updated to fit today's living but still retain its unique charming character. For all its charm, these colonials have been around for decades, some even more than a century and will probably outlast homes built in the last 50 years. The reason is most of these old colonials are so well built. Unlike today when you can build a home in a matter of days, years ago, it took months to build a home.
There are certain characteristics that distinguish certain colonial homes. Dutch Colonials have a Gambrel roof over the dormers on the second floor. French provincial has a very steep roof and a curved window trim that extends through the cornice. Georgian colonial has chimneys at either end. This is typical of the brick mansions that were built by the wealthy during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Tudor has a pitched roof with wooden embellishment outside, stucco in construction and gothic windows and doors. Most historic districts of a town have plenty of old Victorian homes. In Oyster Bay, homes in the "Village" which is the downtown area are colonials built during the early part of the 20th century. In the Florence section of town, there are plenty of colonial homes with wrap around porches. The new colonials are mostly two- to three- story structures. Some embellishments of colonials are columned portico. All these colonials have outstanding interior features. They are loaded with architectural details - crown moldings, chair railings, ceiling medallions, columns, window trims, intricate millworks, wainscoting, unique fireplaces, frieze and cornices, open porches - all of fine craftsmanship.
