That is spectacular! But I thought it was now a hotel?? Am I getting my historic houses mixed up?

Ahhh, If I only were born a Vanderbilt! Did you get a chance to see this magnificant historical building? I actually traced the Vanderbilts to living heirs today, quite interesting!

Wow, Looks live a wonderful place to visit.

Rosalinda, wow that is something!  I hope it is a hotel or something else now otherwise what a colossal waste to use all that energy, etc. for one family!  Beautiful, but all I can think is what a drain on energy...

Dear Rosalinda:

Thanks for posting such a nice picture of the estate! I work for Biltmore, and hope it's okay if I respond to a couple of questions in your comment section?

Lisa: Biltmore includes Inn on Biltmore Estate (the only hotel on property).

Mike: We're honored to be on your bucket list; hope you visit soon!

Joanne: Biltmore House was indeed built for George Vanderbilt's family (he was a bachelor when it opened in 1895; married in 1898; one daughter born in 1900). His descendants still own it today and we welcome more than 1,000,000 guests per year and provide about 1800 jobs for the region.

Sonny: The current owner of the estate is George Vanderbilt's grandson; our President & CEO is his great-grandson. The Vanderbilt Family is still alive and well today!

Thanks for letting me participate!

Jean - Thanks for your participation.  Since you work there, I'm sure you know the place better than anyone.  It's a very beautiful place.  We went to Asheville just to see the place few years ago.  Both the house and the ground are so impressive.  We also had lunch at the former stable which is now a restaurant and the food was delicious.  The Vanderbilt also built other mansions in Long Island but not as big as Biltmore.

Rosalinda - That house is gorgeous; but OBSCENELY large!  If I didn't know better, I'd swear it belonged to the CEO of a health insurance company:-)

I've only seen this in pictures, and just can't believe it used to be someone's house. This looks bigger than some small towns!

This is fascinating info about this historic house. I would love to visit here one day!

This is one of my favorite places to visit. My first trip was when I was in the 5th grade and I've been back many times since. If you want to read a great book that tells you a lot about the family then read....

Fortune's Children.....The rise and fall of the Vanderbilts.

They had homes that took up whole City blocks in New York, etc.

Thanks for the post....Have a great day!

Wow, I didn't know that!  Thanks for the tidbit.  That is a huge and beautiful...does it qualify as a castle?  Reminds me of the house on the Witches of Eastwick.  Now I have to see if it was filmed there.

I've never seen the Biltmore in person, I bet its a sight to see, I wonder how much it cost to build in today's dollars?

Posted by Morgan Evans-New York City Real Estate Expert (Prudential Douglas Elliman) about 2 years ago

Myrl - The place has 250 rooms with four acres of floor space.

John - The ground is approximately 8,000 acres with gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect who designed the New York Central Park.

Carissa - I guess it can qualify as a castle.

Morgan - They don't build this kind of home anymore.  The workmanship in this house is monumental and extraordinary.

Robert - Biltmore is a magnificent place.  Too bad we were not allowed to take photographs inside.

Diane - The trip was worth it.  I was enthralled.

Charles - You're not that far from Asheville.  I highly recommend it.

Tony & Darcy - Great to share beautiful things with everyone.

Posted by Rosalinda Morgan "The Rose Lady" about 2 years ago

Mara - It's one of the most impressive places to see.  It can compete with any grand estates in Europe.

Rob - It's amazing how much money the Vanderbilt had to build all these houses - in New York city, Long Island, Newport, Rhode Island and this one.  I'm sure there are others.
