COMMUNITY EVENTS IN OYSTER BAY AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS

 

Oyster Bay, NY looks like a very quiet town but from all the events that are going on, it does not seem so.  Here is the list of things residents and visitors can participate and enjoy themselves.     

FRIENDS OF THE BAY LECTURE SERIES

2 Townsend Square (Next to Il Piatto), Oyster Bay

Wednesday, April 1 at 7 pm - Discussion of the Coastal Resilience Project featuring Sarah Newkirk of the Nature Conservancy detailing the tools that can help guide decisions impacting rising sea levels and coastal hazards.  Pre-registration not required, but is appreciated (922-6666 or info@friendsofthebay.org).  Suggested donation of $5. 

 

WATERFRONT CENTER SPEAKER SERIES

Tuesday, April 14th-  The People Side of Sailing (It's Not All About Technology), presented by John Rousmaniere, author of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, and many other books.  The Storrs' residence in Oyster Bay, 8 P.M.  To REGISTER and for directions, contact Mary@thewaterfrontcenter.org or call 922-SAIL(7245).  Space is limited.  $10 donation suggested.  Beverages and warm weather topics provided!

Thursday, March 26th-  The Literary Antecedents of Theodore Roosevelt, presented by Charles Markis, Chief of Interpretation at Sagamore Hill, describing the authors and writings that influenced TR as a young man and throughout his life.  Christ Church Parish Hall, East Main St., Oyster Bay, NY, 7:30 P.M.  FREE to the public, via Friends of Sagamore Hill (364-1869).  

Tuesday, April 28th- Theodore Roosevelt's Use of the Navy in Diplomacy, presented by CDR Henry J. Hendrix II, USN, Ph.D.  Commander Hendrix is a Naval Flight Officer, prolific author and National Secretary of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.  Christ Church Parish Hall, East Main St., Oyster Bay, NY, 7:30 P.M.  FREE to the public, via Friends of Sagamore Hill (364-1869).  

Tuesday, May 12th- TR and The Arts of His Time, presented by Mr. Franklin Hill Perrell, Chief Curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art.  A lecture and video presentation on art in the time of Theodore Roosevelt.  Mr. Perrell is a noted artist, lecturer and foremost authority on art of the "American Gilded Age".  Christ Church Parish Hall, East Main St., Oyster Bay, NY, 7:30 P.M.  FREE to the public, via Friends of Sagamore Hill (364-1869).  

  

OF INTEREST TO YOUTH:

Saturday, April 4th - Easter Egg Hunt at Theodore Roosevelt Park (via Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys and Girls Club, and generously sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Owen T. Smith).  2 hunts that will begin simultaneously- 1 for those in first grade and younger; another for those in grades two and up.  FREE and OPEN TO ALL AGES, 12 Noon.

HEALTH & WELLNESS EVENTS

Wednesday, April 8th-  AMERICAN HEART ASSOC. NATIONAL START! WALKING DAY / TOWN DESIGNATED WALKING PATH.  The Town of Oyster Bay (in conjunction with the AHA) has designated a 1-mile walking path throughout the Hamlet.  All are encouraged to attend the 11 A.M. kickoff at Fitness Together (123 South Street- Nassau Hall).  Prior to the official opening, all will have an opportunity for a FREE health screening at Fitness Together.

Saturday, April 25th-  ANNUAL COMMUNITY WELLNESS AND ANYTHING ON WHEELS WALK, sponsored by Doubleday-Babcock Senior Center and Oyster Bay Cooperative Preschool.  Walk or wheel around the Hamlet in strollers, tricycles, skates, or wagons in kicking off the Spring season.  Meet at Doubleday-Babcock Senior Center (922-1770), 9 A.M.   

Saturday, May 16th-  6TH ANNUAL HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR (via Chamber of Commerce and State Senator Marcellino).  Audrey Avenue.

Saturday, April 25th-  62nd Annual Commemorative Service and Pilgrimage in Memory of Theodore Roosevelt (via N.Y.S. League of Masonic Clubs and Matinecock Lodge No. 806).  10 A.M.-  Coffee at the Lodge (14 West Main Street); 11 A.M.-  Service at the Lodge, with guest speaker Nick LaBella (Youngs Cemetery Caretaker); Pilgrimage after the service to TR's gravesite to lay a memorial wreath;  Back to the Lodge for collation.  For additional information, call 390-7169.
