EXCITING DAY FOR US WHO LIVE IN DOWNTOWN OYSTER BAY, NY

It was supposed to be a non-congested traffic day yesterday having redirected the route for the triathlon event which took place in the morning.  However an unexpected thing happened very early in the morning and the whole traffic system went awry.

At about 3:30 A.M, I was awakened by a loud explosion which I thought for a while was coming from my airconditioner but I knew I did not turn on the airconditioner last night.  I was the last person to go to bed and I turned the ceiling fan instead.  Then I heard my husband say he knew it.  He said he heard a buzzing sound and true enough it sounded like a transformer blew up.  Within seconds, I heard the fire siren went.  We waited and looked at the back of the house.  I saw flashing lights from the next street behind us.  Then finally, I dozed off to sleep.

Our alarm went on at 5:30 AM as usual and off at 6:30 AM.  Then at 6:45 AM, I heard click and the lights went off.  Lucky for us we have a gas stove so we were able to have at least hot tea with breakfast.  But I had a tough time lighting up the stove with my boxed matches.  Since I haven't used them for so long, they were all duds.  I tried four boxes before I found one that worked.  My husband walks the dog around the block every morning, but this morning half of the next street was roped off.  The firemen won't let him go around the block but he found out what happened.  The transformer which was located halfway down the telephone pole blew up and the flame shot all the way to the top of the telephone pole.  It is ironic the house next to it just closed and moved in last Monday.  I wondered how they felt.  That must have scared the hell out of them especially a big explosion next to their home at 3:30 in the morning.  Are they going to put the house back on the market soon, I wondered?

All morning, I saw so many cars passing my street.  It looked like the traffic was being rerouted to my street.  It got really heavy around noontime.  I guess the triathlon was over and people were leaving town.  I'm supposed to do an open house at my house at 2 PM.  I was thinking how I won't be able to even get out of my driveway to go to the office and pick up my balloons.  By 1 PM, the lights went back on and the traffic looked like it was abating.  So I left for the office at 1:15 PM.  The street looked cleared and I just hit a snag at the main road and the next street with cars turning left to go to town.  I was going south to go to the office.  Coming back is another story.  There was again traffic jam at the corner of my street and the main road.  I put my sign on the corner but I had to stop three times because of the traffic jam.  My street can only have three cars abreast.  So if cars are parked on both sides, only one car can get through.  With bumper to bumper traffic, it was impossible but finally I did, then hit a snag again just turning left into my driveway.  It took four cars to finally let me through into my driveway.  I walked the other sign for the other corner of my street.  No way, I would drive down there.  You couldn't make a U-turn.

We only had this kind of traffic on my street during the Oyster Festival which happened in October.  That day, I wouldn't dare take my car out of the driveway.  I walked to town and skipped going to work.  Everybody walked to the Waterfront and enjoyed the festival.

This morning I talked to a fellow agent who is a firefighter.  He said they blocked the next street and there were several fire trucks, firemen and police officers there because they were afraid they might have to evacuate people.  We did not know that.  Early last night, one lady who my husband met while walking the dog said they just moved two blocks away a month ago and asked if it is like this all the time.  They were told it's a quiet town.  My husband assured them Oyster Bay is a small, quiet town but today is an aberration.  Then he met one of my neighbors who asked about my open house.  My husband said nobody came which I expected with that kind of gridlock on my street.  My neighbor said "At least, she has a clean house!"

OSO EASY ROSES - THE OTHER DISEASE RESISTANT ROSES

Another breakthrough in the field of disease resistant roses is now on the market. Look for them at your nursery and be the first to grow these roses. Besides the whole series of Knock Out Roses, there are other roses in the market that are disease resistant.  It is called the OSO EASYTM ROSES and they are very easy to grow and highly disease resistant.

OSO EASYTM ROSES come as Proven Winners plants. For a plant to have a Proven Winners label, it has to pass an evaluation process for superior performance, excitement and satisfaction. Only after it meets the exacting criteria, then and only then can it earn the right to wear the Proven Winners white container. These roses are grown without fungicides.

Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc of Grand Haven, Michigan, a wholesaler, has been working with breeders all around the world, tested many varieties and most failed because they developed blackspot or mildew. After four years of testings, a few plants came out clean without the use of fungicide and thus came the beginning of the OSO EASYTM ROSES. Here are some roses in the series:

OSO EASYTM PAPRIKA - A low mounded rose with plenty of spicy reddish-orange single blooms accentuated with a bright yellow eye and glossy green leaves with an attractive hint of red in the new growth. This rose was hybridized by Chris Warner of UK. This rose was never sprayed in production and never showed signs of blackspot.

OSO EASYTM PEACHY CREAM - These low mounded roses have blooms that emerge peach and then turn to cream. The large double flowers are self cleaning and have a glossy dark green foliage. It was hybridized by Colin Horner of the UK and was never sprayed in production yet showed no signs of blackspot.

OSO EASYTM FRAGRANT SPREADER - This ground cover rose has loads of fragrant, single, pink flowers. This rose was also hybridized by Chris Warner of the UK and was never sprayed yet there was no sign of blackspot or nildew.

OSO EASYTM STRAWBERRY CRUSH - This low mounded rose has plenty of blooms that emerge strawberry pink and transform to cream. The large, double flowers are self cleaning and has dark glossy green leaves. Hybridized by Colin Horner of UK, this rose was never sprayed in production and has no signs of blackspot.

OSO EASY® MANGO SALSA - The continuous blooms have an amazing color: shades of ruby red grapefruit, summer sunsets, and those fancy tropical drinks with umbrellas in them.  They cover the tidy mound of dark, glossy foliage.

OSO EASY® CHERRY PIE - A new Oso Easy rose that produces an abundance of bright, candy apple red flowers.  The flowers are large and single, bright yellow stamens.  The foliage is glossy and highly disease resistant.

23rd ANNUAL RUNNER'S EDGE TRIATHLON IN OYSTER BAY, NY

On Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, the Greater Long Island Running Club will be cooperating with the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department to stage the 23rd annual Runner's Edge Triathlon in the hamlet of Oyster Bay, NY and the surrounding areas.  The first wave of athletes will enter the harbor at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park for the swim at 7:30 AM and the last participant should cross the finish line before 11:00 AM.

Proceeds of this event will once again go to such important charities as the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Gerald Kaufman Memorial Fund and, new this year, the Doubleday Babcock Senior Center on East Main Street in Oyster Bay.

Nearly a third of the participants, who range in age from 8 to 80, will be from Oyster Bay, East Norwich, Bayville, Mill Neck and other local communities, so come on out and cheer your friends and neighbors.

COURSE OF THE RUNNER'S EDGE - TOBAY TRIATHLON:

Swim Course: (approximately ½ mile) starts on boat ramp and goes off in waves.  Please "seed" yourself in the front, middle or back of your wave based on your swim ability.  Orange buoys will demark the course.  There will be plenty of in-the-water support should anyone need it.

Bike Course: (approximately 9.3 miles)  Bikes will be racked in the large area on your right as you enter the park.  (Again, no one other than triathletes will be allowed in this area).  The course heads toward and along the beach at the start, exits out the back of the park (near the marina) at the foot of South Street, and makes a left onto East Main Street.  It continues on East Main, and bears right as East Main channels into Cove Road.  Head south on Cove Road for about 1.5 miles until you turn left onto Moore's Hill Road.  (This uphill is only .3 mile but is very steep).  If you walk here please stay to the right.  On the other side of the hill go past the Police booth to Stewart, make a right and continue until Route 25A, make a right and continue west on 25A for about 2 miles (the last mile is uphill).  Turn right onto Berryhill Road.  This road becomes a very fast downhill and leads to a right turn onto McCouns Lane.  Continue on McCouns Lane to a sharp left turn onto East Main Street.  There will be a 2 way bike traffic for 3 blocks on East Main Street until you cross South Street and East Main Street becomes Audrey Avenue, so please stay to your left and proceed with care.  You will be making a right turn to re-enter the Park.  Continue to the bike finish (back at the bike racks).  Please, please slow down and dismount your bike at the railroad tracks!  Once in the Park, bear right into the transition area and jog to your bike rack area.

Run Course: (3.1 miles) Cross over the Long Island Railroad tracks onto Larabee Avenue.  Turn left at the traffic light onto West Main Street.  Make a right onto Underhill Avenue and a right onto Mill River Road.  Turn right onto Glen Cove Road, staying on the left side of the street, and proceed up the very steep hill until you make a left onto Planting Fields Road.  Proceed about 100 yards past the entrance to the Planting Fields Arboretum, where you will "turn around" and return back down Planting Fields Road.  Turn right onto Glen Cove Road, and proceed down the hill.  Turn left onto Lake Avenue.  At the big intersection head straight onto West Shore Road.  Make a right immediately past the LIRR overpass onto Beeckman Beach and proceed on a 200 yard straightaway to the finish.

Please avoid driving on the course route if at all possible.  The bike course and the run course have been changed this year in order to minimize the inconvenience to local residents.

Muttontown residents enjoyed the benefits of living near several golf courses.  Tam O'Shanter Club has a prominent location on Route 107 and is located in Brookville.   There are other golf courses nearby - Muttontown Golf and Country Club in Muttontown, Pine Hollow Golf and Country Club in East Norwich,The Mill River Club in Upper Brookville, Brookville Country Club located in Old Brookville, Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, Piping Rock Club in Matinecock and the Creek Club in Lattingtown.
