TENEBRAE SERVICE - THE EMOTIONAL STORY OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST

Come and join the Msgr. James E. Collins Memorial Choir of St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay for the Tenebrae Service on Holy Wednesday, March 31 at 7:30 PM at St. Dominic Chapel.  What is a Tenebrae Service?  It is an ancient liturgy.  Tenebrae is a latin word for shadow or darkness.  According to St. Dominic Church bulletin, "Tenebrae is a dramatic way of tracing out progressively the struggles between the dark forces of sin and death that seems to extinguish the Light of the World.  The evocative setting of St. Dominic Chapel, the candles, the readings from the passion story by the lectors and contemplative sacred music from the choir will make the evening a memorable start for the parish's Holy Week journey."

It is the most moving service of the Holy Week.  The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the passion story. The story is left unfinished because it is not over till Easter Day.  The first time I joined the choir and we sang at the Tenebrae service, I found it so emotional.  It is my favorite service.  It is also a very short service.  It starts with seven candles on the altar.

The first reader reads the assigned reading, then extinguishes the candle on the extreme right of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on one section of the church are turned off.  Then the choir sings.

The second reader reads the next reading, extinguishes the candle on the extreme left of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off.  The Choir sings.

The third reader reads the assigned reading, extinguishes the next candle on the right of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

The fourth reader reads the assigned reading, extinguishes the next candle on the left of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

It follows the sequence until the priest says the final prayer and the middle light of the candelabra is extinguished and total darkness sets in the chapel.  At this point, the service ends.  There is no benediction.  After a moment of silence, a very dim light is turned on so the congregation can see to leave.   They all leave in silence.

HOMES FOR SALE IN OYSTER BAY, NY - MARCH 16, 2010

As of March 16, 2010, there are 59 homes for sale in Oyster Bay, NY.   4 properties has been sold in Oyster Bay since the beginning of the year in 2010 compared to 3 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2009 for the same period.  In addition to 4 properties that closed, there are also 4 properties that are now under contract.  Average days on the market are 162 days.  Sales of homes in Oyster Bay are picking up but prices are still going down.  There is no new construction.

Few years ago, the town imposed a building moratorium after a builder tore down the Youngs family home on Burtis Ave and Kellogg St. and built 3 huge houses on the property.  Next to it, another house, a small red Dutch colonial was sold and was torn down and in its place another huge house stands now.  These new homes and another one on Summers St. upset the old time residents and it also triggered the formation of a group called Save the Jewels by the Bay to pursue the preservation of old historic homes.  The majority of the residents wanted to keep the small town ambience of the place.

New zoning laws have been implemented to prevent sub-division and overdevelopment of lots and the town adopted the Oyster Bay Hamlet Residence Design District.  The district's purpose was to establish a framework within which certain special standards can be developed and implemented that are applicable to the unique town of Oyster Bay. These standards include a restriction to the floor area ratio of homes.  It is a method of controlling the size of houses to prevent unduly large homes.  This is important because by reducing the size of a new home that you can build, it reduces the incentive for tear downs and helps to preserve the aesthetic character of the town.

Here is the list of homes for sales in Oyster Bay, NY as of March 16, 2010:

COLONIAL HOMES IN OYSTER BAY, NY

For lovers of colonial homes, there are plenty of choices in Oyster Bay, NY As of March 10, 2010, there are 27 homes on the market at different price ranges.

The organization called "Save the Jewel by the Bay" is actively pursuing the preservation of these old colonials that dot the landscape of downtown Oyster Bay, NY.

Colonial Homes is recognized for its handsome architecture, its important history and the comfort it brings to the family.  Plenty of those old vintage colonials have been updated to fit today's living but still retain its unique charming character.  For all its charm, these colonials have been around for decades, some even more than a century and will probably outlast homes built in the last 50 years.  The reason is most of these old colonials are so well built.  Unlike today when you can build a home in a matter of days, years ago, it took months to build a home.

There are certain characteristics that distinguish certain colonial homes.  Dutch Colonials have a Gambrel roof over the dormers on the second floor.  French provincial has a very steep roof and a curved window trim that extends through the cornice.  Georgian colonial has chimneys at either end.  This is typical of the brick mansions that were built by the wealthy during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Tudor has a pitched roof with wooden embellishment outside, stucco in construction and gothic windows and doors.  Most historic districts of a town have plenty of old Victorian homes.  In Oyster Bay, homes in the "Village" which is the downtown area are colonials built during the early part of the 20th century.  In the Florence section of town, there are plenty of colonial homes with wrap around porches.  The new colonials are mostly two- to three- story structures.  Some embellishments of colonials are columned portico.   All these colonials have outstanding interior features.  They are loaded with architectural details - crown moldings, chair railings, ceiling medallions, columns, window trims, intricate millworks, wainscoting, unique fireplaces, frieze and cornices, open porches - all of fine craftsmanship.

East Norwich is about two miles south of Oyster Bay and north and east of Muttontown and Brookville, and west of Oyster Bay Cove.  Though small, it does not lack the convenience of a big town. The oldest part of town just south of Route 25A is loaded with old colonial homes.

There is a beautification committee that takes care of the little garden where the welcome sign is and the entrance to Norwich Green and Radcliff Drive.  Norwich Green, the development behind Rothman's was started in the 1950's with mostly capes and ranches.  Then Radcliff Drive development followed next and then the Pine Hollow development behind the Pine Hollow shopping center where Stop & Shop is further down the road on Route 106.  In the 70's, The Hollows on Route 25A, now million dollar homes, were developed.  Nowadays, the town has seen so many changes with residents changing the look of the developments.

At the southwest corner of Route 106 and Route 25A is our office, Century 21-Laffey Associates, where the old Meyerdiecks Meat Store used to be, across from the Rothman's Restaurant.

East Norwich, NY is very convenient to major highways - Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway are only minutes to East Norwich, within 5 miles.  East Norwich is a short driving distance to two railroad stations, the Oyster Bay Line and the Syosset Line.  You also have an option of taking the LIRR from the Hicksville station where there are more trains available coming both from the North and South part of Long Island.  Hicksville is about 6 miles from East Norwich.
