WINTER CURB APPEAL FOR HOME FOR SALE IN OYSTER BAY AND BROOKVILLE, NY

If you are trying to sell your home in Oyster Bay and Brookville areas during the winter months, making a good first impression is very important.  Here are some things that you should remember when preparing your home for sale in winter.

•1.        Now that the snow has finally arrived, make sure the driveway, walkway to the front door and the front steps are clear of snow.

•2.       Make sure the front yard is clean and free of debris.

•3.       Proper outdoor lighting makes the home safe and attractive to the buyer who comes to see the house after dark.

•4.       Make sure the gutters are clean so leaves cannot accumulate and clog the gutter.

•5.       Before you put the house on the market, make sure the exterior paint is not peeling off.  Better yet, have exterior walls painted in the fall before the For Sale sign goes on the front yard.

•6.       Have evergreen plants in containers on the front steps to welcome visitors to your home.

•7.       If you are decorating for the holidays, do not overdecorate.  Too many inflatable things outdoors is not for everyone.  A simple wreath on your front door sometimes will suffice.

•8.       Make sure the house number is clearly visible from the street.

THE LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

I stumbled upon the Legend of the Christmas Tree while going through boxes of old Christmas Cards.  Today, the Christmas tree is the highlight of our Christmas festivities.  Topped with a star, and adorned with lights and ornaments, it is a part of the beauty and meaning of the Christmas season.

How did the Christmas tree come to play such an important part in the observance of Christmas?  There is a legend that comes down to us from the early days of Christianity in England.

One of those helping to spread Chriatianity among the Druids was a monk named Wilfred (later Saint Wilfred).  One day, surrounded by a group of his converts, he struck down a huge Oak tree, which, in the Druid religion, was an object of worship.

As the Oak tree fell to the ground, it split into four pieces, and from its center there grew a young Fir tree,  pointing a green spire toward the sky.

The crowd gazed in amazement.  Wilfred let his axe drop, and turned to speak.

“This little tree shall be your Holy Tree tonight.  It is the wood of peace, for your houses are built of the Fir.  It is the sign of an endless life, for its leaves are evergreen.  See how it points toward the heaven.  Let this be called the tree of the Christ Child.  Gather about it, not in the wilderness, but in your homes.  There it will be surrounded with loving gifts and rites of kindness."

And to this day, that is why the Fir Tree is one of our loveliest symbols of Christmas.

WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

PAY IT FORWARD - THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS FOR A GRADE 2 KID

My husband and I are both active with the Interreligious Group in Oyster Bay.  I am the treasurer in charge of the Food Drive for almost 20 years and my husband is the treasurer in charge of the Toy Drive for about 15 years.  We do not do the actual distribution but we work on the back scene making sure we have enough money to finance our charities and we send all the thank you letters to all the donors.

Yesterday, we received a letter from Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School's Social Worker with cash money in coins for $6.00 with the letter and I quote:

"I found this in my mailbox this morning.  A little boy in grade 2 (whose birthday was today) brought in his own money to give to the toy drive."

In front of the envelope reads:

"Benjamin donated money from his wallet."

We were so touched by Benjamin's gesture.  $6 might not be a lot of money for adults but for a grade 2 kid, that is a lot of money but he gave it away so some kid out there can have a toy for Christmas.

My husband called the Social Worker at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and asked where to send a special thank you to Benjamin for his wonderful gift.  He also called the Toy Drive Coordinator and told her about it.  We were all touched and inspired by this "big" gesture from the little boy.  It reminds you of the Little Drummer Boy.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT EAST NORWICH, NY 11732

East Norwich, NY is a small charming town on the way to Oyster Bay, NY.  East Norwich, NY should not be confused with Norwich, Connecticut.  There is also an East Norwich in England.  Years ago, delegates from East Norwich in England came over here to visit and residents of East Norwich, NY planted daffodils along Route 106 to celebrate spring at that time.  There is a beautification committee that takes care of the little garden where the welcome sign is at the northeast corner of Route 106 and Route 25A and also the entrance to Norwich Green and Radcliff Drive.

East Norwich, NY is home to the famous landmark, Rothman's Restaurant located at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A at the northwest corner.  Rothman's Restaurant has been there long before I moved to the area in 1971.  Rothman's Restaurant has undergone several ownerships over the years.  It was owned and started several years ago by the Rothman family of Oyster Bay.  The late Gloria O'rourke, one of the Rothman's children was a past editor of the Oyster Bay Guardian, our local newspaper, and she had fond memories of the Rothman's Restaurant.  At some point, Burt Bacharach, the  singer, owned the Restaurant and also the East Norwich Inn, the only hotel in town which sits behind Rothman's.  Now there are plans to open a high end shopping center behind Rothman's restaurant and close the East Norwich Inn.   Luckily because of the economic downturn, that plan is now on hold.

Several small restaurants came into being few years later in East Norwich.  For such a small town, there are so many good restaurants in East Norwich, NY.  Besides Rothman's, we have Angelina Restaurant, Luce, (the old Girasole), Saggio, La Pizzeta, Mezina's Market, a Chinese take out and Pancake House.  There is also a Bagel Boss in town.  There is a very good bakery on Route 25A called Boulangieri.  A gourmet grocery store called Christina Epicure on Route 106 has a fantastic selection of gourmet food. There are also clothing shops in town.  The southeast corner of Route 106 & Route 25A where the old Texaco gas station and later Patio.com garden furniture store was is now a vacant lot.  Another gas station, Exxon is next to Pancake House on Route 25A.  East Norwich has its own post office and its own fire department.

East Norwich, NY has three shopping areas, two on Route 106 and one on Route 25A.  Our office, Laffey Fine Homes is prominently located at the southwest corner of Route 106 and Route 25A where the old Meyerdiecks Meat Store used to be opposite the Rothman's Restaurant.

If you like gardening, Martin Viette Nursery has an excellent selection of plants and garden accessories and Christmas decorations in all price ranges.   In the fall, there is an Apple Festival and Hay Ride at Martin Viette Nursery.  Years ago, there was a lilac farm in East Norwich, located on Remsens Lane.  East Norwich used to have the famous huge Black Walnut tree located near the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A.  There is a plaque now where once the Black Walnut Tree stood.  It was the oldest Black Walnut Tree on Long Island and for no apparent reason the town decided to cut it down.  It was after that and with the residents' outcry, the town realized they made a mistake but it was too late.  They planted a seedling which they purported to be an offspring of the mighty old Black Walnut tree at the southeast corner of Route 106 and Route 25A but it will take years to attain the stature of the original tree.

Muttontown Preserve is located just south of East Norwich.  Nassau Hall and Chelsea, county owned properties are nearby.  There is an Equestrian Center next to Muttontown Preserve for those who love horseback riding.  There are two golf courses in town - Pine Hollow Country Club, and Muttontown Golf and Country Club, both on Route 25A.

According to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, there are 22 homes sold in East Norwich, NY in 2010 and 3 under contract as of Dec. 7, 2010 compared to 16 homes sold in East Norwich in 2009.  The median price of homes sold in East Norwich, NY in 2010 is $523,150 compared to the median price of home sold in East Norwich, NY in 2009 of $557,500, a drop in price of 6%.  Average days on the market in East Norwich, NY in 2010 is only 75 days, compared to 80 days in 2009.  As of Dec. 7, 2010, there are only 10 homes for sale in East Norwich, NY 11732.

East Norwich, NY is a very interesting place, small and charming and full of history.  It is believed that George Washington stopped here during his journey to Long Island.  The oldest part of East Norwich just south of Route 25A is loaded with old colonial homes.  Two old buildings from East Norwich are relocated to Old Bethpage Restoration (an historic colonial village) - the Powell House and the Layton General Store.  The Powell House used to belong to the Downing family.  At some point in the olden days, the Downing family used to own properties from Route 106 westward to Martin Viette Nursery on Route 25A.  One of the oldest homes in town is the Downing's home situated near the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A on the southeast corner behind the old Texaco gas station.  The Downing's house was originally located close to Route 106 but was moved further back when Route 106 was constructed in preparation to build the Bayville-Rye Bridge which was defeated.  At that time, Route 106 was a small country road and then it became a 4-lane highway.

Norwich Green, the development behind Rothman's was started in the 1950's with mostly capes and ranches.  Then Radcliff Drive development followed next and then the Pine Hollow development behind the Pine Hollow shopping center where Stop & Shop is further down the road on Route 106.  In the 70's, The Hollows on Route 25A, now million dollar homes, were developed.  Nowadays, the town has seen so many changes with residents changing the look of the developments.
