December 2010 in Oyster Bay, NY is quite a busy month for the community. EVERY Saturday and Sunday- VISIT THE OYSTER BAY RAILROAD MUSEUM / VISITOR CENTER and TURNTABLE RAILYARD.
- 100-102 Audrey Avenue (just north of the gazebo/bandstand- on the right), where you will be directed to the turntable railyard- featuring a variety of refurbished train cars, 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. The latest arrival to the museum, the World's Fair Cab unit. The World's Fair Cab unit was dedicated on May 8, 2010. The big orange and blue cab had 1964 on the front and will bring back memories of the summer at the '64-65 World's Fair in Flushing Meadow. Many of the collectibles belonged to Pete Taormina who left his sizable collection of train memorabilia to the OBRM. The OBRM hopes to raise enough money to continue with all their plans. Items included framed photos, beer steins, HO trains, toys and collectibles.
Saturday, December 11th AND Sunday, December 12th- HOLIDAY EXPRESS (via the OB Railroad Museum), featuring free horse and carriage rides, children's author Heather Worthington signing copies of her book "Miles of Smiles: The Story of Roxey, the LIRR Dog", model railroad layout, refreshments, and more. OB Railroad Museum Visitor's Center, 100-102 Audrey Avenue (just north of the gazebo, on the right), 12 Noon to 4 P.M. It features interactive hands-on audiovisual exhibits, an operating O gauge train layout, description of the plans for the museum and a gift shop. The Museum's rail-yard (at the entrance to TR Park- near the boat basin), with a variety of vintage train cars and operating turntable, will also be open for visitors. Saturday, December 11th- WINTER TRACKING. Learn some local animal tracks, learn their behaviors, and look for clues in the woods to see who has passed through the area recently.
