OYSTER BAY - THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S HOMETOWN

Oyster Bay, NY is rich in culture and history.  Oyster Bay is Teddy Roosevelt's hometown.  Everywhere you look, there is a footprint of Teddy Roosevelt.  There is a park called Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and the elementary school is named Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School.  Teddy Roosevelt had his summer white house here at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay Cove from 1902 to 1908.  He worshiped at Christ Church in Oyster Bay.  He had an office at the Moore Bldg in Oyster Bay and received phone calls at Snouder's Drug Store in Oyster Bay.  He participated at the Fourth of July parade here and rode the Long Island Railroad in Oyster Bay.  There is a bust of Teddy Roosevelt in front of the Town Hall and a TR statue by sculptor, A. Phiminster Proctor now located in front of the Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay which will be moved soon to the triangle piece of land across the Boys and Girls Club, as a welcoming entrance to Oyster Bay.

Oyster Bay, NY is a small picturesque town on a peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island with Victorian homes from bygone era on a tree-lined street.  Oyster Bay has a lot to offer the residents and visitors alike.  Besides the beautiful beaches, Oyster Bay has magnificent parks, arboretum, museums - Raynham Hall and Earle-Wightman House of the Oyster Bay Historical Society.  The Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay commissioned Mort Kunstler, a famous historical painter, to do a painting of Roosevelt at "Fourth of July Oyster Bay Parade".  Copies of the print are now for sale at the Boys and Girls Club at the corner of Berry Hill Rd and Route 106 as a fundraiser.

Just as we have the Roger Bahnik Boys and Girls Club for the kids, we also have the Doubleday-Babcok Senior Center for the seniors.  It is a place where seniors can socialize and keep healthy with exercise, well balanced nutrition and much, much more.  In 2008 alone, the Center served 1775 seniors with various programs and services.

Nearby is Planting Fields Arboretum, 409 acres of beauty and the most visited state park in the area.  Here is a vast collection of trees and several gardens for your pleasure.  Beauty abounds at this park, and it is always beautiful at any time of the year. In the summer time, there are music concerts galore.  Several garden clubs use the Burns Horticultural Center for their flower shows and meetings.  Rose lovers should visit in the spring or summer when the rose arbors and rosebeds are in bloom.  There is an annual rose show in June at Planting Fields Arboretum sponsored by the Long Island Rose Society.

Oyster Bay area is served by three schools and 3 fire departments. There is the Teddy Roosevelt elementary school, the Vernon Middle School and the Oyster Bay High School. East Norwich, the next town shares the same schools with Oyster Bay. There is also the St. Dominic Elementary School and St. Dominic High School for those who want a catholic education. Nearby are three private school - East Wood School in Oyster Bay Cove, Friends Academy and Portledge School in nearby Locust Valley. For the safey of the community, we have two fire departments (Atlantic Steamer Fire Company and the Teddy Boys Fire Company. Helping out close by is the East Norwich Fire Department.

Oyster Bay, NY is famous statewide with their annual Oyster Festival in the Fall. This festival draws around 200,000 people into town during the two-day event in the Fall.  Oyster Bay residents enjoy the amenities of a beautiful park with the nearby Waterfront Center. The water at the Long Island Sound is a big playground to those with watercraft from little sunfish to big yacht. You might even see some celebrities around.

There are 64 homes for sale in Oyster Bay as of July 28, 2009.  There were 21 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2009 compared to 22 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2008.   Few years ago, the town imposed a building moratorium after a builder tore down the Youngs family home on Burtis Ave and Kellogg St.  and built 3 huge houses on the property.  Next to it, another house, a small red Dutch colonial was sold and tore down and in its place another huge house stands now.  These new homes and another one on Summers St. upset the old time residents and it also triggered the formation of a group called Save the Jewels by the Bay.

Oyster Bay, NY is one of the most attractive places to live, work and play in Long Island, New York.  Thanks to the commitment of local residents who care a lot about their community as evidenced in their tremendous participation in community organization in town. Civic and fraternal organizations abound and all you have to do is call somebody and chances are she/he is involved in some kind of organization and love to bring you in.

OYSTER BAY COVE - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE ON LONG ISLAND NORTH SHORE

Oyster Bay Cove, an incorporated village next to Oyster Bay, is the most beautiful place on the North Shore of Long Island.  Some people confuse Cove Neck as part of Oyster Bay Cove.  Cove Neck is just north of Oyster Bay Cove.  Most homes in Oyster Bay Cove are on two acres lot with plenty of mature trees so if you want your privacy, Oyster Bay Cove is the place to be.  Oyster Bay Cove lies east of Oyster Bay and East Norwich, north of Syosset, and west of Laurel Hollow.  Only small areas of Oyster Bay Cove - Steamboat Landing, Landing Rd, part of Cove Woods Rd and part of Cove Rd. have waterfront properties.  On the other hand, most homes on Cove Neck are either waterfront or waterview properties.  With the economy the way it is, you can get a house on a small lot with an Oyster Bay Cove address for $895,000.  The most expensive home in Oyster Bay Cove is listed at $4,895,000.  Football player, Vinny Testaverde's home is on the market for $3,995,000.  Last year, a French Normandy Style Manor called "Northwood" on 26 plus acres property sold for $17,500,000.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, the former home of Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th U.S. President, is located in the Village of Cove Neck.  Youngs Memorial Cemetery, TR's Grave and Nature Preserve are all located in Oyster Bay Cove.   Because of the geographic location, children of the residents of Oyster Bay Cove and Cove Neck go to three different school districts - Oyster Bay-East Norwich, Syosset or Cold Spring Harbor.

The late Oleg Cassini, the fashion designer for Jacqueline Kennedy had a big place in Oyster Bay Cove.  Oyster Bay Cove is so different from the Hamptons because you can keep your privacy here.  Charles Wang, former CEO of Computer Associates has huge property in Cove Neck.  His neighbor is Charles Dolan, CEO of Cablevision.  Mort Kunstler, the world famous Civil War painter, live in Oyster Bay Cove.  The Schiff family owns huge property on Sandy Hill Rd opposite the Cassini's property.  The Schiff family is probably one of the early settlers in the area with a vast land holdings that over the years have been subdivided.

Oyster Bay Cove does not have the glitz and glamour of the Hamptons and people don't gawk at celebrity here.   Most celebrity who settle here are down to earth people who want to lead a quiet life although they are very involved in the community.  They give a lot to the community through the various local charities.

During the summer. for several years, the late Fritz Coudert III and his wife Marge, played host to several hundred kids from Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in New York and recently included Oyster Bay Boys & Girls Club members for a day of outing at his home in Oyster Bay Cove.  Fritz Coudert's daughters said they will continue the tradition their father started.  The Couderts also hosted the Annual "Wassail Party" during the Christmas season for the benefit of the Doubleday-Babcock Senior Center.  Mrs. Francis Storrs who owns a big house with a big ballroom in Cove Neck lend her home to some organizations to do fundraising events.  George & Abby (Rockefeller) O'Neill have an annual fundraising event for Community Foundation which largely supported the Youth and Family Counseling Agency.

Mr. & Mrs. Charles Dolan celebrate their 4th of July wedding anniversary with a fireworks at their home in Cove Neck to be enjoyed by people in the area.

HOMES FOR SALE IN BROOKVILLE, NY - JULY 25, 2009

Homes for sale in Brookville, NY range from ranches to huge estate with plenty of choice in between.  As of July 24, 2009, according to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, there are 29 homes for sale in Brookville, NY with Jericho schools and 8 homes for sale in Brookville with Locust Valley schools.  Various architectural styles are represented.  There are 16 colonials, 5 contemporaries, 3 expanded ranches,  3 post moderns, 3 ranches,  2 splits, 3 estate and 1 other.

Brookville, NY has always been a magnet for the well-heeled clientele.  During the heyday of the Gold Coast era, this area of the North Shore is a playground for the old money and the aspiring nouveau riche.  Big mansions are scattered all over the place with sprawling lawns and a whole cadre of help to maintain these opulent estate.  Recreation mostly involved fox hunting  or polo match at Meadowbrook Club.  That gracious era is long gone but properties are still on 2+ acres zoning.

Franklin Delano and Aldrich, the prominent architect of the ‘20s made his first commission in this area.  His first commission is the Christie House which was modeled after Mount Vernon, the home of our first president, George Washington.   This mansion is now called Nassau Hall owned by Nassau County Government.  It has a vast collection of pine trees in the premises.   Nearby is another mansion, a French Chateau style built for William Clements' wife as a reminder of her home in France.  This mansion is also owned by Nassau Government and used now for various charity fundraising events and concerts in the summer.

COMMUNITY PROFILE - EAST NORWICH, NY - A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

EAST NORWICH, NY IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE  inspite of it being a small town on the way to Oyster Bay.  East Norwich, NY should not be confused with Norwich, Connecticut.  There is also an East Norwich in England because years ago, delegates from that town came here to visit and residents of East Norwich planted daffodils along Route 106 to celebrate spring at that time.  There is a beautification committee that takes care of the little garden where the welcome sign is and the entrance to Norwich Green and Radcliff Drive.

East Norwich, NY is home to the famous landmark, Rothman's Restaurant located at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A.  Rothman's Restaurant has been there long before I moved to the area.  It was originally established by the Rothman family of Oyster Bay.  At some point, Burt Bacharach, the singer bought it.  East Norwich Inn, the only hotel in town sits behind Rothman's.  Now there are plans to open a small shopping mall behind Rothman's restaurant and close the East Norwich Inn.  Luckily because of the economic downturn, that plan is now on hold.

If you want to find your dream home in East Norwich, there are 18 homes for sale in East Norwich, NY as of July 24, 2009 with prices ranging from $459,000 to $1,699,000.  The oldest part of East Norwich just south of Route 25A is loaded with old colonial homes.  Two old buildings from East Norwich are relocated to Old Bethpage Restoration (an historic colonial village) - the Powell House and the Layton General Store.  The Powell House used to belong to the Downing family.  At some point in the olden days, the Downing family used to own properties from Route 106 westward to Martin Viette Nursery.  One of the oldest homes in town is the Downing's home situated behind the Patio.com store.  I remember Mrs. Downing showing me a chair which has a provenance that George Washington sat on it.  The Downing's house was originally located close to Route 106 but was moved further back when Route 106 was constructed in preparation to build the Bayville-Rye Bridge which was defeated.  At that time, Route 106 was a small country road and then it became a 4-lane highway.  At the southwest corner of Route 106 and Route 25A is our office, Century 21-Laffey Associates, where the old Meyerdierks Meat Store used to be.

Norwich Green, the development behind Rothman's was started in the 1950's with mostly capes and ranches.  Then Radcliff Drive development followed next and then the Pine Hollow development behind the Pine Hollow shopping center.  In the 70's, The Hollows on Route 25A, now with million dollar homes were developed.  Nowadays, the town has seen so many changes with residents changing the look of the neighborhood.

East Norwich, NY boasts one of the best playing fields for children - the St. Dominic School Playing Fields located on Route 25A, thanks to the generosity of some wealthy residents in the area.  The Vernon Middle School of the Oyster Bay - East Norwich public school system is located in East Norwich.  The elementary school and the high school are both located in Oyster Bay.   There is another school in East Norwich for students with special needs.  East Norwich shares the library system with Oyster Bay and it is located in Oyster Bay.

East Norwich, NY has two small shopping centers.  One on Route 106 and the other one on Route 25A.   For such a small town, there are so many good restaurants in the area - there is Rothman's, Angelina Restaurant, Luce, (the old Girasole), Saggio, La Pizzeta, Mezina's Market, Pancake House and Bagel Boss.  There is a very good bakery on Route 25A called Boulangieri.  A new gourmet grocery store called Christina Epicure just opened and has a fantastic selection of gourmet food. There are shops for children's clothing too. There is also a garden furniture shop called The Patio.com store where the old Texaco gas station was.  Another gas station, Exxon is next to the Pancake House on Route 25A.  East Norwich has its own post office and its own fire department.

Muttontown Preserve is located just south of East Norwich, NY.  Nassau Hall and Chelsea, county owned museums are nearby.  There are two golf courses in town - Pine Hollow Country Club, and Muttontown Golf and Country Club.

If you like gardening, Martin Viette Nursery on Route 25A has a good selection of plants and garden accessories in all price ranges.    In the fall, there is an Apple Festival and Hay Ride at Martin Viette Nursery.  Years ago, there was a lilac farm in East Norwich, located on Remsens Lane.  East Norwich used to have the famous huge Black Walnut tree located near the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A.  There is a plaque now where once the Black Walnut Tree stood.  It was the oldest Black Walnut Tree on Long Island and for no apparent reason the town decided to cut it down.  It was after that and with the residents' outcry, the town realized they made a mistake but it was too late.  They planted a seedling which they purported to be an offspring of the mighty old Black Walnut tree on the corner next to Patio.com store but it will take years to attain the stature of the original tree.

East Norwich, NY is very convenient to major highways - Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway are only minutes to East Norwich, within 5 miles.  To take the LIRR, you have a choice of going to Oyster Bay, Syosset or even Hicksville stations.

SUMMER CARE FOR YOUR ROSES

To keep our roses happy during the summer months, here are some things we ought to do.

Mulching - Rosebeds with 2" or 3" of mulch do not need as much water as the beds without mulch.  There are all kinds of material we can use as mulch - pine bark nuggets, pine needles, hay, shredded oak leaves, seaweeds, cedar mulch or cocoa mulch.  The rose beds look much better with mulch and the mulch also helps the roses retains moisture, keep the roots cool and aid in the prevention of weeds.  I don't recommend cocoa mulch if you have a dog.  They smell great and dogs love it but it is not good for them.  One report said that a dog died because the dog ate so much cocoa mulch.  You know chocolate is bad for dogs and chocolate comes from cocoa beans.

Watering - Roses needs at least 2" of water every week especially during the hot dry summer days.  So when the rain stops, water them deeply.  I run the soaker hose for 2 hours at a time.

Spraying - Continue the spray program every 7-10 days until the temperature hit the 90's.  Spray early in the morning or early evening.  I use Messenger and Pyola, both organic spray.

One question that some rosarians ask this time of year is why the roses' leaves are turning yellow.  This chlorotic condition of the leaves is caused by various factors.

Roses love slightly acidic soil with pH between 5.5 and 6.5.  In high alkaline soil around 7.0 - 7.5, roses leaves tend to develop chlorosis.  The leaves turn yellow but the veins remain green.  The presence of chalk prevents the assimilation of iron which is needed for the synthesis of the chlorophyll.  Apply chelated iron once a month when watering your roses.  Some rosarians dig a trench around the leaf line of the plant and give it some new acidic soil.

The yellowing of the leaves coupled with stunted growth and small leaf size and small flowers can be nitrogen deficiency.  The mulch that you put in your beds to control weeds can also deprive your roses of nitrogen.  To offset this condition, give your rose bushes a cupful dose of Epsom salt in Spring and again in the Fall.

Roses do not like wet feet and their roots will rot, leaves will turn yellow and eventually die.  Good drainage is very important in choosing location.

Compacted soil around your rose bushes can also cause the leaves to turn yellow.  It's always a good idea to loosen the soil every so often to get some oxygen into the soil.  In this aspect, remember to plant your roses where you can take care of them without trampling all over the place to reach them.

Another most common cause of the yellowing of rose leaves is the normal aging of the plant.  They use up all their energy so the leaves turn yellow and fall off.  They then develop a whole new set of leaves.  In this case, there is nothing to worry about.
