EAST NORWICH, NY REAL ESTATE UPDATE - APRIL 13, 2009

The proximity of East Norwich to the waterfront community of Historic Oyster Bay and the private school atmosphere of its excellent public school system (the Oyster Bay-East Norwich school district) make East Norwich attractive to home buyers.

East Norwich is a small, charming town that lies between Muttontown and Oyster Bay.  Though small, it is full of history and it does not lack the convenience of a big town.  It is about two miles south of Oyster Bay, north and east of Muttontown and Brookville, and west of Oyster Bay Cove.

The famous landmark, Rothman's Restaurant is at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A in East Norwich.  The oldest part of town just south of Route 25A is loaded with old colonial homes.  Norwich Green, the development behind Rothman's was started in the 1950's with mostly capes and ranches.  Radcliff Drive development followed next and then the Pine Hollow development behind the Pine Hollow shopping center where Stop & Shop is further down the road on Route 106.  In the 70's, The Hollows on Route 25A, now million dollar homes, were developed.  Nowadays, the town has seen so many changes with residents changing the look of the developments.

East Norwich is very convenient to major highways - Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway are only minutes to East Norwich, within 5 miles.  East Norwich is a short driving distance to two railroad stations, the Oyster Bay Line and the Syosset Line.  You also have an option of taking the LIRR from the Hicksville station where there are more trains available coming both from the North and South part of Long Island.  Hicksville is about 6 miles from East Norwich.

My office, Century 21-Laffey Associates is prominently located at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A across the Rothman's Restaurant.

As of today, April 13, 2009, there are 16 homes for sale in East Norwich. For the 1st quarter of 2009, there are two homes sold in East Norwich.

BRAVO TO OUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIREMEN

It has been a busy week at church this week culminating at Easter Mass this morning.  It was a lovely service till about the communion part of the mass. An elderly lady, could be on her eighties, sitting four rows in front of us had a fainting spell.  I didn't realize it till I saw a lady went to the back and brought a glass of water, then two ushers kept on coming back and forth.  Then I realized something was wrong.  I saw a lady holding tight an elderly lady close to her.

Then I heard the fire siren.  Our church is four blocks from the Fire Dept.  Within five minutes, two firemen came with their emergency medical box and one of the firemen had a stethoscope checking her breathing.  This was right on the center isle while the parishioners were all lined up for communion.  Then four firemen tried to lie down the lady on the pew and hooked her up to an oxygen tank.  Then as soon as the last communicants piled up, the gurney came up the center aisle.  The lady was so feisty.  She kept on asking where she was going and saying "I don't want to go to the hospital."  She was barely audible since she was hooked up to the oxygen tank.  Then they put her on the gurney and she was out of the church as the priest was saying the Final Blessing.  By the time we sang the Recessional Hymn she was out of the church and into an ambulance to the hospital.

The firemen did a fantastic job quietly without disrupting so much of the Easter Mass.  The people at the back of the church did not know what was going on until the gurney came up.  The firemen showed a total respect and reverence for the celebration of the Easter Mass.   We are so proud of our local volunteer firemen for their quick response and efficiency.  They are a great asset to our community.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!

TENEBRAE SERVICE - THE MOST MOVING SERVICE OF THE HOLY WEEK

Tonight, I sang with the choir at the Tenebrae service at St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay.  What is a Tenebrae Service?  It is a Service of the Shadows.  Tenebrae is a latin word for shadow.  It is the most moving service of the Holy Week.  The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the passion story. The story is left unfinished because it is not over till Easter Day.

The first time I joined the choir and we sang at the Tenebrae service, I found it so emotional.  It is my favorite service.  It is also a very short service.  It starts with seven candles on the altar.

The first reader reads the assigned reading  which is "The Betrayal", then extinguishes the candle on the extreme right of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on one section of the church are turned off.  Then the choir sings.

The second reader reads the next reading which is "Agony in Gethsemane", extinguishes the candle on the extreme left of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off.  The Choir sings.

The third reader reads "The Arrest", extinguishes the next candle on the right of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

The fourth reader reads "The Denial", extinguishes the next candle on the left of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

The fifth reader reads "The Trial", extinguishes the next candle on the right of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

The sixth reader reads "The Crucifixion", extinguishes the next candle on the left of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. The Choir sings.

PIETA By Tom Kendzia

Come and See, what I have done: I've given My only Son.

He lived for you, and He died for you.

Come and See.

Lamb of God, Lamb of God, have mercy on us, forgive us, Lord.

Come and See, what I have done: I've given My only Son.

He lived for you, and He died for you.

Come and See.

Creator of Love, source of all life, have mercy on us, forgive us Lord.

Come and See, what I have done: I've given My only Son.

He lived for you, and He died for you.

Come and See.

Then the priest say a final prayer, extinguishes the next candle on the center of the candelabra.  At the same time, the lights on another section of the church are turned off. By this time the whole church is in total darkness.  At this point, the service ends.  There is no benediction.  After a moment of silence, a very dim light is turned on so the congregation can see to leave.   They all leave in silence.

Only two homes sold in Laurel Hollow this year.  A contemporary at 433 Cold Spring Rd., Laurel Hollow sold for $1,100,000 on Jan. 5, 2009 and a farm ranch at 434 Cold Spring Rd., Laurel Hollow sold for $925,000 on March 4, 2009.

The Village of Laurel Hollow in the township of Oyster Bay lies between Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay Cove.  It is a beautiful village with specimen trees and magnificent homes on big acreage.  The school district is partly Oyster Bay, Syosset and partly Cold Spring Harbor.  Likewise, the post office is serviced by Oyster Bay 11771, Syosset 11791 or Cold Spring Harbor 11724.  Laurel Hollow is strictly a residential community.  There is no business establishment in the village.  People shop in nearby towns, either in Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset or Huntington.

Laurel Hollow is mostly hilly with an abundance of tall trees with understory of mountain laurel hence the name.  Years ago, when winter in this area was so cold, I used to take my kids ice skating on the pond next to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Close nearby is the Cold Spring Laboratory, a world class scientific laboratory where Barbara McClintock did her experiment on the jumping corn and was the 1983 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine.  We also have the Fish Hatchery across the street from Cold Spring Laboratory on Route 25A.
