Oyster Bay is a small picturesque town on a peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island with Victorian homes from bygone era on a tree-lined street.  Oyster Bay has a lot to offer the residents and visitors alike.  Besides the beautiful beaches, Oyster Bay has magnificent parks, arboretum, and museums.  It is one of the most attractive places to live, work and play in Long Island, New York.

Oyster Bay is rich in culture and history.  The town of Oyster Bay is Teddy Roosevelt town.  Everywhere you look, there is a footprint of Teddy Roosevelt.  There is a park called Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and the elementary school is named Roosevelt Elementary School.  Teddy Roosevelt had his summer white house here at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay Cove from 1902 to 1908.  He worshiped at Christ Church in Oyster Bay.  He had an office at the Moore Bldg in Oyster Bay and received phone calls at Snouder's Drug Store.  He participated at the Fourth of July parade here and rode the Long Island Railroad in Oyster Bay.

There is a bust of Teddy Roosevelt in front of the Town Hall and a TR statue by A. Phiminster Proctor now located in front of the Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay which will be moved soon to the triangle piece of land across the Boys and Girls Club.

There are plenty of homes for sale in Oyster Bay right now.  Sales in 2009 have increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2008.  There were four homes sold in 2008 at this time.  Five homes have sold so far this year.  Prices are about the same.  It went up by .008 %.  Here is the list of homes sold in 2009.

HOMES FOR SALE IN BROOKVILLE - MARCH 19, 2009

Brookville is one of those villages that connotes luxury living.  Houses in this enclave of the North Shore of Long Island start at over $1 million and go all the way to almost $13 million.  There are still few homes built in the ‘50s but some new constructions have emerged in the last five years.

During the heyday of the Gold Coast era, this area of the North Shore is a playground for the old money and the aspiring nouveau riche.  Big mansions are scattered all over the place with sprawling lawns and a whole cadre of help to maintain these opulent estates.

Brookville is located south of Muttontown, north of Jericho, west of Syosset and east of Greenvale and Old Westbury.  Brookville does not have its own post office but shares with Glen Head - 11545.  Most of the properties in Brookville are on flat ground with very few exceptions that sit on a slope.  Brookville does not have a shopping center and residents shop in nearby community in East Norwich and Oyster Bay or Greenvale.  School districts for Brookville residents can be Jericho, Locust Valley or Oyster Bay-East Norwich.  There is one private school in the area- Lutheran High School.  Golf courses abound.  Brookville is only minutes to major highways and Syosset branch of the Long Island Railroad is close by.

As of March 19, 2009, according to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, there are 21 homes for sale in Brookville with Jericho schools and 9 homes for sale in Brookville with Locust Valley schools.  Various architectural styles are represented.  There are 16 colonials,3 contemporary, 2 expanded ranch, 2 post modern, 3 ranch, 2 split, 1 raised ranch and 1 other.

BAYVILLE HOMES FOR SALE - MARCH 17, 2009

Bayville is a small beach town west of Centre Island, east of Lattingtown and north of Mill Neck across from the Bayville bridge.  Bayville used to be a summer community but now most residents live year round.  I talked to some friends who are residents of Bayville and asked why they love Bayville and was told the small town community atmosphere, close to the beach, beautiful sunsets , plenty of restaurants but no fast food restaurants.  In the summer time, it's so pleasant to go to an Oyster Bar near the Bayville Bridge.

Along Bayville Ave, the main thoroughfare, are private roads to the north to Long Island Sound side of town, to the south to Mill Neck creek.  These roads are maintained by the homeowner associations.  The village zoning does not allow condominiums, co-ops or apartment buildings.  There are house summer rentals and winter rentals as well.

Residents of Bayville will not want to live anywhere else because of its location close to the water.  However, there is a trade off.  Bayville has no public transportation and the nearest train station is 10 minutes drive to Locust Valley or even farther to Syosset where there are plenty of trains.

As of March 17, 2009, there are 36 homes for sale in Bayville, NY.  Price ranges from $319,000 for a ranch and $1,650,000 for a colonial.  Out of the 36 homes for sale, only three of them are waterfront properties.

AN IRISH MAN'S SEARCH FOR GOLD

Here is the story of a man's quest for that pot of gold and he found it by selling real estate.

In 1956, 17 year old Thomas Laffey arrived in New York from Ireland looking for his pot of gold.  He settled in Long Island and decided to sell real estate.  Through hard work, he was able to open his First Residential Real Estate Office in Long Island in 1974.  Over the next decade, Tom's sons joined the company and successfully opened 10 branch offices across Nassau and Queen Counties.

In 1997, Laffey Associates made a big move and joined the Cendant Organization through Century 21's Fine Homes and Estate division.

Today, Century 21 Laffey Associates, now run by Tom's sons: Philip Laffey, President, Emmett Laffey, CEO, and Mark Laffey, COO, has grown to the No. 1 post in The Tri-State Area among all Century 21 firms.

Currently The Laffey Organization has 872 listings available and 351 listings under contract.  In the last 68 days, Century 21 Laffey Associates closed 166 sides with a sales volume of $86 million.  Contract signed in the last 68 days is worth $125 million in sales revenue on 152 sides.

Persistence, hard work, quality of service were traits Tom Laffey empowered himself and it worked then and still working today.  Through team work, excellent customer service and the leader in technology, the Laffey Organization continues its quest for more pots of gold.  I'm happy to be a member of that team.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY TO ALL!!!

SPRING IS ALMOST HERE. IS YOUR GARDEN READY?

As the weather warms up in our area, there are various tasks ahead of us.  So is your garden ready?

You can't go digging in the garden as yet.  It is too wet and soggy.  If you dare do some digging now, the ground will become compacted.  Better hold off for a few more weeks.  The only thing I do now is to scatter some Epsom salt into the garden beds.  Why Epsom salt ?  If you read the label on the box, it says Magnesium Sulfate.  Magnesium Sulfate is a trace element that plants need to encourage new growth, promote greener leaf and bloom better.

Once the ground is workable, check the pH of your soil.  Gather 1 cup of soil from 4 different areas in your garden.  Put them in separate sandwich bags, label them where you get them and take them to Cornell Cooperative Extension Service and have the soil tested.  Follow the recommendation of the Master Gardeners.

Now is also the time for equipment maintenance.  If you did not clean up your tools last fall, now is the perfect time to clean up, oil and sharpen them.  Then armed with your pruner, take a stroll through the garden.  Check for plant damage and then prune broken branches and winter kill.  That's about all the pruning you can do for now.

Clean the garden of debris, broken twigs, and weeds.  Don't let the weeds go to seeds. Keep the chickweed out of your garden beds.  It grows and seeds during the cold months and seeds now are future weeds.  So get rid of them before they proliferate.   Clear mulch off the bed before the spring bulbs start to come up.

While you  are out there in the garden, cut some stems of spring flowerings shrubs for forcing indoor.  Think spring!!!
