ROSES 101 - WHERE TO BUY GOOD QUALITY ROSES

At this time of the year, we are all getting tired of winter and starting to think of spring.  It is the best time to contemplate on what roses to plant and where to get them.  I always buy my roses from mail order suppliers.  They have more varieties to choose from.  I'm putting a list below of mail order suppliers and they are all excellent sources.  For the benefit of novice rose gardeners who for the most part believe that only Jackson & Perkins sells good roses, there are other mail order suppliers that's are as excellent if not better.

OYSTER BAY COVE HOMES FOR SALE - FEBRUARY 21, 2009

Oyster Bay Cove, an incorporated village next to Oyster Bay, is the most beautiful place on the North Shore of Long Island.  Most homes in Oyster Bay Cove are on two acres lot so if you want your privacy, Oyster Bay Cove is the place to be.  Oyster Bay Cove is so different from the Hamptons because you can keep your privacy here.   We do not have the glitz and glamour of the Hamptons.  People don't gawk at celebrities here.   Most celebrities who settle here are very involved in the community.  They give a lot to the community through the various charities in town.  During the summer for several years, the late Fritz Coudert, played host to several hundred kids from Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in New York for a day of outing at his home in Oyster Bay Cove.

Oyster Bay Cove lies east of Oyster Bay and East Norwich, north of Syosset, and west of Laurel Hollow.  Steamboat Landing, Landing Rd, end of Cove Woods Rd and only part of Cove Rd. have waterfront properties.  Houses in Oyster Bay Cove range in price from $1,250,000 to $5,900,000.  Some people confuse Cove Neck as part of Oyster Bay Cove.  Cove Neck is just north of Oyster Bay Cove.  Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, the former home of Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th U.S. President, is located in the Village of Cove Neck.  Youngs Memorial Cemetery, TR's Grave and Nature Preserve are all located in Oyster Bay Cove.   Because of the geographic location, children of the residents of Oyster Bay Cove go to three different school districts - Oyster Bay-East Norwich, Syosset or Cold Spring Harbor.

There are 42 homes for sale in Oyster Bay Cove.  Below is the list of what are in the market right now:

RED ROSES FOR VALENTINE

As we celebrate Valentine's Day, legend has it that Cupid gave red rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence to bribe him to secrecy over the dalliances of Venus and so the red rose become the symbol of discretion, love, passion and romance.  Roses were henceforth painted on the ceilings of banquet halls to remind all gathered there that whatever was said there, should not be repeated which became the expression sub rosa (under the rose).  Another legend says that while Aphrodite was running to the dying Adonis, she was scratched by a rose bush and her blood falling on the roses turn it into red.  Other account says that Adonis turned his blood into red roses.

Whatever legend strikes your fancy, there is nothing in our garden at this time of the year but the florist and even the supermarket stores are selling roses grown in South America.  And how did Valentine's Day get started anyway.  A certain Bishop Valentine started it to replace the Roman festival of Lupercalia.  There were several Bishop Valentines but nobody is really certain as to who is the real Bishop Valentine.  But whoever he is, the tradition continues and we celebrate this day exchanging gifts and greetings between our loved ones, friends, family but mostly lovers.

During the Victorian era, valentine cards are mostly decorated with old-fashioned roses.  Even today, valentines are still associated with roses.  For Valentine's Day, red roses are the most popular flower.

HAPPY VALENTINE DAY!!!

DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN BROOKVILLE, NY? HERE IS THE TOWN PROFILE.

Brookville, one of the most sought after address on the North Shore has a lot to offer clients with discriminating taste.  Price ranges from $1,398,000 for a ranch to $5,450,000 for a colonial.  Most of the properties in Brookville are on flat ground with very few exceptions that sit on a slope.  Brookville is only minutes to major highways and Syosset branch of the Long Island Railroad is close by.

Brookville is located south of Muttontown, north of Jericho, west of Syosset and east of Greenvale and Old Westbury.  Brookville does not have its own post office but shares with Glen Head - 11545.  The demographics are majority Italians with a sprinkling of Russian, German, Polish, Irish, English and other minority groups.

School districts for Brookville residents can be Jericho, Locust Valley or Oyster Bay-East Norwich.  There is an excellent preparatory school located on Brookville Rd, the Lutheran High School.  CWPost College, now the Long Island University is situated on Route 25A.  Nearby is the New York Tech, an excellent engineering school.   Recently it added a culinary school.

For the cultural minded people, there is The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on Route 25A.  It has world class performances and you do not have to drive to New York City and fight the traffic.

Brookville does not have a shopping center and residents shop in nearby community in East Norwich and Oyster Bay or Greenvale.  For dining pleasure, residents of Brookville take advantage of several restaurants on nearby East Norwich where cuisine range from simple fare to expensive gastronomical experience.  We have Rothmann's Steakhouse, Angelina Italian Restaurant, Luce formerly known as Café Girasole, Saggio Pizzeria, La Pizzetta Restaurant, Pancake House, Mezzina Market, Taste of China and Tokyo and Bagel Boss Café.

Brookville with its bucolic settings also offer numerous recreational facilities.  Golf courses abound in the area.  Tam O'Shanter Club has a prominent location on Route 107 and is located in Brookville.   There are other golf courses nearby - Muttontown Golf and Country Club in Muttontown, The Mill River Club in Upper Brookville, Brookville Country Club located in Old Brookville, Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich, Piping Rock Club in Matinecock and the Creek Club in Lattingtown.
